Deal Edgar (Eddie) Powell

Jesup—Deal Edgar (Eddie) Powell, 73, of Jesup died Jan. 17, 2023, after a short illness in his home. He was surrounded by his family and under the care of Hospice of Southeast Georgia.

The Waller, Texas, native was born to the late Lester J. and Edna Earle Powell and lived most of his life in Jesup. He retired from Central Issue Facility as a classifier of Army equipment located on Fort Stewart, with partial timed served in the U.S. Army stateside and Vietnam. He had 33 years of dedicated service. He also served as a trained National Guardsman for five years.

He was a member of the Marketplace International Church and Training Center of Jesup. He loved fishing, hunting, cooking, and bargain hunting at flea markets and yard sales. His favorite activity was spending time with his family.

He was predeceased by his parents, Lester J. and Edna Earle Powell; his son, Steven Deal Powell; sisters, Happy, Betty and Glenda; and one brother, Clifford.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Kathy Powell of Jesup; a daughter, Angela (Tracy) Walker; a son, Richie (Michele) Powell; grandchildren, Brittany Lariscy, David L. Lariscy II, Laci Lariscy, Dalton Powell, Conner Powell, Hanna Powell and Tori Walker; great-grandchildren, Jordynn, Arianna and Jalaya; two sisters, Cynthia Graeter and Sherry Jewell, both of Texas; his mother-in-law, Peggy Mason Kirkland, Massachusetts; his special sidekick, Ethan Ussery; a special “adopted son,” G. William Rinehart III; and a large host of family and friends.

Funeral services were held Jan. 20 at Rinehart and Sons Chapel with the Rev. Ray Hamilton, the Rev. Tony Simmons and the Rev. Cherry Simmons officiating. Interment was at Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Glennville. Active pallbearers were Trevor Mason, Will Mason, J.D. Mason, Wesley Mansfield, Kevin Manuel and Lee Knight. Honorary pallbearers were nephews Bob Mason, Ethan Ussery, Randolph Cox and brother-in-law, Anthony Mason.

Doris Hogan Anderson

Dublin—Doris Hogan Anderson, 83, of Dublin, formerly of Jesup, died Jan. 17, 2023.

The Jonesboro native was a Christian Baptist and a homemaker. She loved to work in her yard, enjoying nature. She was a very vibrant, independent woman who needed no assistance in her latter years.

She was predeceased by her son, Jack Anderson; sisters, Gladys Westberry, Betty Jean Hogan and Marilyn Seagraves; and brothers, Dock Hogan and Ricky Westberry.

Survivors include two daughters, Glenda (Randy) Stapleton of Jesup and Angie (Ken) Phillips of Jesup; four sons, Jimmy (Tempie) Anderson of Jesup, Joe (Jan) Anderson of Brunswick, John “J.P.” Anderson of Wrightsville and Charles (LeeAnn) Harris of Dublin; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and three brothers, Sam “Billy” (Sylvia) Hogan of Orlando, Florida, Paul (Carolyn) Hogan of Dublin and David “Bo” (Shirley) Hogan of Blitchton.

Funeral services were held Jan. 20 from Rinehart and Sons Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. John Daughtry officiating. Interment was in New Hope Cemetery. Active pallbearers were her family.

Mary Ann Hodges

Anderson

Jesup—Mary Ann Hodges Anderson, 91, of Jesup died Jan. 20, 2023.

A fifth-generation Wayne County native, the home she was born in on Bay Street still stands. She was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, in which her grandmother was a founder in 1905. She graduated from Jesup High School in 1949 and the University of Georgia in 1953, earning a degree in education.  There she met the “love of her life” Charles “Chuck” Anderson, and married in 1954. She served as a Wayne County educator for 35 years. She and her husband were among the founding members of Pine Forest Country Club, where she had served as president of the Ladies Golf Association. She enjoyed her time golfing and playing in coastal area tournaments, playing tennis, playing in local bridge clubs, raising her three children, volunteering in their sporting events, and enjoyed many years with her four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Chuck Anderson; her son, Art Anderson; and parents, Jimps Hodges and Laura Virginia Surrency Hodges.

Survivors include her daughter, Jan Anderson Davis of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida; son, Jim Anderson of Jesup; and grandchildren, Bart Anderson, Brent Anderson, Victoria (Cody) Brookshire, Stephanie (Hunter) Berger.

Funeral services were held Jan. 24 from St. Paul’s Episcopal Church with Father Nathan Wilson officiating. Private interment was in the Jesup City Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers were friends of her bridge groups, friends of Pine Forest Ladies Golf Association and friends of the Wayne County Retired Teachers Association.

Caroline McDaniel Raines

Jesup—Caroline McDaniel Raines, 51, of Jesup died Jan. 23, 2023, of injuries sustained from an automobile accident.

The long-term Wayne County native was a 1989 Wayne County High School graduate and later received her degree in phlebotomy from Coastal Pines Technical College. She enjoyed working with her patients in Wayne Memorial Hospital and was a member of New Life Church. Her second love was getting fresh shrimp off the boats in Brunswick for her many customers.

She was preceded in death by her dad, Owen Raines; maternal grandparents, Thad and June McDaniel; and her first cousin, Freddie Cox.

Survivors include her daughters, Chasity Bowen and Melanie Newbern, both of Jesup; mother, Martha McDaniel (Cliff) Gilmer of Jesup; sister, Mandy Raines Spear of St. Simons Island; two stepbrothers, Scott Collins Gilmer of Guyton and Troy Alex Gilmer of Isle of Palm, South Carolina; and seven grandchildren, Jayda, Alexis, Tristen, River, Logan, Korbean  and Alec.

Graveside memorial services will be held today (Thursday) at 2 p.m. in Thomasville City Cemetery, with the Rev. Steve Larson officiating, at 800 E. Jackson Street, Thomasville, GA 31799.

Rebecca “Becky” Kessner

Jesup—Rebecca “Becky” Kessner, 61, of Jesup died Dec. 23, 2022.

The German- born native was a high school graduate there prior to coming back to the states with her family. She had worked previously with Pine Forest County Club and the Huddle House here in Jesup.

She owned a cleaning service in Helena, Montana, before moving back to Wayne County seven years ago. She enjoyed her family.

Survivors include her husband, George Kessner of Jesup; two sons, Mark (Ciara) Thomas of Jesup and Brandon Thomas of Jesup; her mother, Helga Richardson of Jesup; three grandchildren, Taytum Thomas, Damien and Troy McDaniels; three sisters, Vicky Richardson, Carla Wells and Candy Richardson; a brother, George Richardson; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services are being held by the family.

Joe Tyson Jr.

Jesup—Joe Tyson Jr., 78, died Jan. 14, 2023 at Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah after a lengthy illness.

He was born on Aug. 3, 1944, in Jesup to the late Joe Tyson Sr. and Lonie Mae Manning Tyson. He loved hunting, fishing, and spending time with his friends and family.

In addition to his parents, his brother, Jack Tyson, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his sisters, Sarah Lee McLain of Jesup and Lollie Manning of Odum. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended-family members also survive.

Graveside funeral services were held Jan. 17 in the Manningtown Cemetery with the Rev. Tim Fulmore officiating.

Pallbearers were family members.

Jeraldine “Jerry” Horton

Odum—Jeraldine “Jerry” Horton, 84, of Odum died Jan. 18, 2023 at her residence under the care of Hospice of South Georgia and surrounded by family and close friends.

She was a native of Appling County but resided in Odum. She was born on March 15, 1938, to the late Wadyce Carter and the late Sarah Craven Carter. She was a former employee of Selco Industries and Appling Health Care and was a volunteer with the Ladies Auxiliary at Wayne Memorial Hospital. She was a longtime member of Ten Mile Creek Baptist Church and currently a member of Red Hill Baptist Church in Jesup.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Carroll Jack Horton, and her son-in-law, Bobby Surrency.

Survivors include her only daughter, Christie Horton Surrency; grandchildren, Marion (Crystal) Surrency, Leslie (Marcus) Day, and Lauren (Bill) Moseley; great-grandchildren, Shelby (Austin) Cravey, Madison Surrency and Chloe Surrency, Lily Beth Day, Lila Day and Vanna Moseley; sisters, Sherry (Johnny) Beecher; a brother, Kelly (Amy) Carter; and a host of extended-family members.

Funeral services were held Jan. 21 from the Chapel of Swain Funeral Home with the Rev. Tommy Daniels and the Rev. Jonathan Mann officiating. Marion Surrency gave the eulogy. Interment followed in Ten Mile Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Marion Surrency, Bill Moseley, Marcus Day, Carter Harrison, Jason Carter and Caleb Carter.

Honorary pallbearers were Joe and Doris Taylor, Sue Murphy, Sisters In Christ Ladies Group, Sherry Curry, Wanda Wagner, Faye Reynolds and Hospice of South Georgia.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.
