Dr. Lanier Harrell

Jesup—Dr. Lanier Harrell, 96, of Jesup died Dec. 4, 2023, under the care of Hospice of South Georgia.

He was born on the family farm in Jeff Davis County near Denton, where he attended elementary school. After his family moved to Waycross, he graduated from Waycross High School and then attended Clemson College (now Clemson University) before serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II Following his discharge from the Navy, he graduated from the University of Georgia.  

He taught and coached at Jesup High School before entering the Medical College of Georgia. Following graduation and an internship, he practiced general medicine in Jesup for 10 years. Then, after a radiology residency, he was the Wayne Memorial Hospital radiologist for 20 years. He was a member of his local, district, state and national medical associations.

He was also a member of Jesup First United Methodist Church and had been a member and officer of numerous civic and community organizations.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Evelyn Warren Harrell, and their daughter, Charlotte Ellen Harrell.

Survivors include two sons, Michael L. (Karen) Harrell of Jesup and Roy (Lisa Tumarkin) Harrell of Gainesville, Florida; grandchildren, Michael L. Jr. (Susan) Harrell, Rebecca (George) Curtis, Hannah Elizabeth Harrell (Jason) Martin, Katherine Berlin Harrell and Lucas Welch (Marcelle) Harrell; step-granddaughters, Tess Tumarkin and Rachel Brannen; great-grandchildren, Miranda and Malcolm Curtis, Mollie Grace and Miles Martin, Sam, Ben and Harper Harrell; and step-great-grandchildren, Madison (Shaun) Fu and Mary Jane Laroche.

Funeral services were held Dec. 6 at Jesup First Methodist Church with the Rev. Rebecca Duke-Barton and Dink NeSmith officiating. Interment followed in Pinecrest Memorial Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Downie Wolfe, Johnny Wolfe, Tom Ritch, Herschel Daniel, John Benner, Reed Brown, Lindsay Walker, Mark Miller, Gary Peel, Mark McGregor, Jiggs Riggins and Fred Bishop.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Jesup First United Methodist Church, 205 E. Cherry Street, Jesup, GA 31546.

Brandon Matthew McManus

Ludowici—Brandon Matthew McManus, 30, of Long and Appling counties died Dec. 1, 2023, from injuries sustained in an accident.

The Wayne County native was a graduate of Long County High School and College of Coastal Georgia. He was a Baptist. He was a former Long County recreation director and was presently enjoying farm work. He spent time with many young people and enjoyed umpiring, hunting and fishing.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Brantley and Melba McManus; and his material grandparents, Robert and Elizabeth “Tootsie” Mann.

Survivors include his mother, Robbie Mann McManus of Surrency; his father, Mark McManus of Ludowici; a brother, Casey McManus, and his mother, Carisa Drury of Woodbine; an aunt, Elaine (Barry) Thompson of Brunswick; and uncles, Brantley McManus Jr. of Jesup and Greg (Delores) Mann of Surrency.

A memorial service will be held by the family at a later date.

Joy Williamson Tuten

Waycross—Joy Williamson Tuten, 89, of Waycross died Dec. 3, 2023, under the care of Hospice of South Georgia.

The Ware County native and longtime resident had been living at Mossy Oak in Jesup the past 15 years. She graduated with honors from Surrency High School and was an all-star basketball player.

She was a member of Screven First Baptist Church. She retired after 32 years from AT&T as a service assistant.

In her free time, she loved to shop for clothes, shoes and jewelry. She also looked forward to her weekly beauty salon trips to visit with friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Luther Tuten, and her parents, Stewart and Maggie Williamson.

Survivors include a son, Harvey (Brandy “Beth”) Tuten of Bristol; a granddaughter, Stefanie (Dwight) Ashton of Sorrento, Florida; two great-grandchildren, Dawson and Skyler Ashton; a sister, Bobbie Jean Aspinwall of Screven; two nieces, Debbie (David) Six and Linda (Cliff) Kicklighter, both of Screven; two great-nephews, Jonathan (Sally) Six of North Carolina and Will (Rachel) Tyre of Screven; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Dec. 6 at Rinehart Chapel with the Rev. Jonathan Six and Durwood Miller officiating. Interment followed in Antioch Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Dwight, Stefanie, Dawson and Skyler Ashton, Jonathan Six and Harvey Tuten.

Alvin L. Roberson

Jesup—Alvin L. Roberson, 91, died peacefully on Dec. 2, 2023, at St. Jos-eph’s Hospital in Savannah after a brief illness.

He was born on April 1, 1932, in Hortense to the late  Albert and Allie Fay Strickland Roberson. He spent his formative years in Waycross before being drafted into the United States Army, where he served his country in Germany and Austria. After returning home to the States, he moved to Jacksonville, Florida, where he worked for the City of Jacksonville, overseeing the maintenance of the Gator Bowl Stadium.

In 1972 he relocated back to Hortense and began a career with Brunswick Pulp and Paper, from which he retired in 1997.

He was a longtime member of Satilla Baptist Church in Hortense, and when he wasn’t working, he enjoyed riding his motorcycle and working on things around the house, “tinkering,” as he would say.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Gloria Davis Roberson; two sons, Michael L. Roberson and Albert P. Roberson; and two sisters, Loretta Moody and Hazle Jacobs.

Survivors include two sons, Charles (Angie) Roberson of Landis, North Carolina, and Joseph Roberson of Jesup; three grandchildren, Justin Roberson, Jessica Sapp and Cody Roberson; and several great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended-family members.

Graveside funeral services were held Dec. 5 at Hortense Cemetery with the Rev. Stanley Todd officiating.

Active pallbearers were Scott Moody, Wayne Davis, Len Davis, Codey Roberson, Justin Roberson and Cain Roberson.

Bruce E. Caldwell

Jesup—Bruce E. Caldwell, 69, died peacefully on Dec. 2, 2023, at Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah.

A resident of Jesup for the past three years and former resident of California, Wichita, Kansas, and Phillipsburg, Kansas, he was born on July 13, 1954, in Topeka, Kansas, to the late Thomas and Gloria Jean Quathamer Caldwell. He worked in metal fabrication for most of his life, eventually working his way up to the position of inspector.

In his spare time, he enjoyed collecting coins, gardening and fishing.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Barry Caldwell.

Survivors include his wife, Dottie Caldwell of Jesup; one son, Bill Caldwell, and his companion, Linda, of Pittsburg, California; a sister, Camille Bobo of Kansas City, Missouri; three stepchildren, Scott Hicks of Fredonia, Kansas, Tracy Hicks and a companion, Patty, of Allenhurst and Jeremy Hicks of Lincoln, Nebraska; an uncle, Vern (Linda) Quathamer of Jesup; a sister-in-law, Joni Riemann of McPherson, Kansas; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended-family members.

Private memorial services will be held at a later date.

Richard John Galloni

Jesup—Richard John Galloni, 91, affectionately known by his friends and family as “Dick,” died peacefully on Nov. 25, 2023, at Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah. 

He was born on May 29, 1932, in Sharpesville, Pennsylvania, to the late John and Ann Marie Rosatti Galloni. He learned the value of hard work at an early age, lettering in football and baseball, and was good enough to play collegiately, but rumblings of war in Korea prompted him to join the United States Air Force after his high school graduation in 1950. He went on to work with airborne avionics systems including radar, bombs, autopilots, electronic countermeasures and navigation systems on several different aircraft. His military service included appointments in Georgia, Colorado, Mississippi, Nebraska, Louisiana and Puerto Rico. In 1971 he retired as a major with 21 years of service. 

After retirement,  he lived in Jacksonville, Florida, for a short time before relocating to Jesup, where he began a teaching career, first in elementary special education and then as a math teacher at Wayne County High School. He later moved to Fernandina Beach, Florida, where he taught junior high and high school math. He served as math department chairman and then assistant principal at Fernandina Beach High, as well as an assistant baseball coach.

He relocated back to Jesup in 1998 and has been very active in the Wayne County community since then.  He was a Master Mason for more than 50 years, attaining the rank of  32nd degree Sco­ttish Rite. He served as Worshipful Master and was also a member of the Knights of the York Right Council of Honor (KYCH) for more than 50 years. He was past commander of the Knights Templar and was also a member of Shriners for more than 50 years.

He was a member of the Kiwanis Club and had served on the Wayne County Tax Assessor Board for more than 15 years. He was a communicant of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, where he served as senior warden.

In his spare time, he was a lifelong artist and painter who also enjoyed reading and solving complicated math problems. He was a lover of animals and an avid Atlanta Braves fan. He played bridge frequently. He enjoyed the company of his beloved family and close friends, and he always cherished the time they spent together.

In addition to his parents, his two brothers, Carl and Joseph Galloni, both preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Jacquelyn Strickland Galloni of Jesup; two daughters, Jan Galloni Hediger of Jesup and Jill Galloni (John) Kampfe of Atlanta; two granddaughters, Katherine Hediger and her fiancé, Harry Tenenbaum, of Nashville, Tennessee, and Anna Louise Kampfe of Brooklyn, New York; and numerous extended-family members.

Mass of Christian Burial was held Dec. 4 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church with the Rev. Nathan Wilson and the Rev. Steve Larson officiating.

Interment services followed in Pinecrest Memorial Cemetery with full military honors rendered by the United States Air Force followed by Masonic Rites.
