Mitchell Brown

Screven—Mitchell Brown, 56, of Screven died Jan. 24, 2024.

The Wayne County native was a Baptist and a former cabinet maker. He was a self-taught guitarist and loved doting on his dog, Zeus.

He was preceded in death by his father, Bruce Brown; and his brother, Eddie Lee.

Survivors include a daughter, Ashley Brown of Jesup; two sons, Matthew Brown of Screven and Gaven (Kari) Brown of Seattle, Washington; two grandchildren; his mother, Sharon (Richard) Bailey of Screven; a stepsister, Rhonda (Rusty) Ritchie of Blackshear; and a stepbrother, Rick (Leta) Bailey of Waycross.

Funeral services were held Jan. 29 at O’Quinn Baptist Church with the Rev. Gerald Greenlee and the Rev. Vann Dempsey officiating. Interment followed in Screven City Cemetery. Active pallbearers were his family and friends.

Rinehart and Sons Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

 

Daniel “Danny” E. Harris

Jesup—Daniel “Danny” E. Harris, 76, of Jesup died Jan. 29, 2024.

The Wayne County native was a member and deacon of Gardi Baptist Church. The Air Force veteran was a pipe fitter with Local Union No. 177 out of Brunswick.  Working in his church was very important to him and he was known as the “Candyman.”

He was preceded in death by his grandson, Levi Harris; his parents, Bennie and Jessie Harris; and sisters, Linda Dixon and Frankie Eason.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Donna Bennett Harris of Jesup; a son, Danny (Lynn) Harris of Jesup; two grandchildren, Payton and Rayna Harris; sisters, Sandra (Richard) Veldhuizen and Gayle (Jim) Franklin, all of Jesup; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

A celebration-of-life service will be held today (Thursday) at 11 a.m. at Rinehart Chapel with the Rev. Randy Pruitt and Pastor David Bohannon officiating. Private interment will be in the Bennett Cemetery in Screven.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the funeral home.

Rinehart and Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

 

 

Wilmer Fred Drury

Hortense—Wilmer Fred Drury, 79, of Hortense died Jan. 26, 2024, at his residence after an extended illness.

He was born in Waynesville to Preston Drury and Ivey Flowers Drury.

He was a timber harvester for Union Camp and a member of Trinity Church of the Nazarene, where he was a deacon for many years. He also attended Bethlehem Baptist Church. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, listening to music, hunting and fishing, and he loved animals, especially his chickens.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Joan Marie Roberson Drury; four brothers; and two sisters.

Survivors include his four sons and daughters-in-law, Christopher Wade (Michelle) Drury of Blairsville, Thomas Brian (Tonya) Drury of Jesup, Tony Drury of Leesburg and Charles (Donna) Drury of Jesup; eight grandchildren, Ethan, Emma, James, Evan, Victoria, Kennedy, Alex and Zack; 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Barbara “Elaine” Knight of Gum Branch; several nieces, nephews and other relatives; and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held Jan. 3 at the chapel of Frye Funeral Home with the Rev. Charles Drury officiating. Burial followed in Mt. Olive Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Alfred “Junior” Drury, Anthony Drury, Clifford Drury, James G. Smith, Jared Thompson and Tom Chancey. Honorary pallbearers were Durwin Phillips and Remington Tew.
