Nettie Faye Overstreet Collins

Odum—Nettie Faye Overstreet Collins, 84, of Odum died Jan. 7, 2022.

The Wayne County native was a member of Friendship Baptist Church and a homemaker. She was an avid reader and enjoyed being with her family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Maxwell Collins Sr.; her son, Robert Summerlin; siblings, Bennie Overstreet and Peggie Blocker; and a granddaughter, Christy Lynn.

Survivors include three sons, Tom M. Collins Jr. of Odum, Charles Collins of Odum and Walter (Shari) Collins of Blackshear; a sister, Mary Autry of Lake Park; grandchildren, Phillip and Joey Collins, Chris Rothfeldt and Jamie Summerlin; and several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Graveside funeral services were held Jan. 9 in Pinecrest Memorial Cemetery with the Rev. Albert Dyal officiating.

Jerry Marvin Overstreet

Odum—Jerry Marvin Overstreet, 73, of Odum died Jan. 6, 2022.

The Wayne County native and U.S. Army veteran was a member of Church of God and a retired employee with Rayonier.

He enjoyed woodworking, hunting, fishing and, most of all, being a “Papa.” He was preceded in death by his daughter, Robyn Overstreet Sutton; his parents, Ed and Mildred Overstreet; and brothers, Chester and Larry Overstreet.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Joan Denison Overstreet of Odum; a son, Bryan Overstreet of Odum; two brothers, Eddie (Maryann) Overstreet of the Mount Pleasant community and Mickey Overstreet of the Gardi community; two sisters, Louann Madray and Vanessa Overstreet, both of the Mount Pleasant community; granddaughter, Kayla Overstreet of Odum, and her family, Bryce and Wyatt Phillips and Shelli Carter of Baxley; and a grandson, Malyx Sutton of Odum, and his father, Steve Sutton, of Hortense.

The family received friends on Jan. 8 at Rinehart and Sons Funeral Home. Private interment was held in the Ritch Cemetery.

Arthur F. McDonald

Ludowici—Arthur F. McDonald, 82, died Jan. 4, 2022, at home surrounded by his loved ones.

He lived in Long and Liberty counties his entire life. He was a faithful member and deacon of Ludowici First Baptist Church. He retired from the Georgia National Guard. After retirement, he worked for several years for Jack Deloach. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Bobbie Julia Skipper McDonald; a son, Arthur Leonard McDonald; a brother, Dewy McDonald; and two sisters, Sue Nell Cattrell and Lucille Morris.

Survivors include his wife, Pamela Dart McDonald; children, William David (Teresa) McDonald Sr. and Debra A. (Brian) McDonald; stepchildren, James R. Mehaffey Jr. and Richard Scott (Rachael) Mehaffey; grandchildren, William David McDonald Jr., Bobbie McDonald, Jay McDonald, Kyle Strick, Bradley Dunn, Michael McDonald, Christy Rockwood, Madison Mehaffey, Sarah Mehaffey and Parker Mehaffey; 16 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. 

Funeral services were held Jan. 8 at Ludowici First Baptist Church. Burial was in Allenhurst Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

Richard Alan Murray Sr.

Hilton Head Island, South Carolina—Rick Murray, 78, died Jan. 4, 2022 with his family by his side from complications related to a heart condition.

He was born in Jesup but had been a resident of Hilton Head Island for 48 years. He was a well-known and respected realtor. He was loved by all who knew him and was known for his strong godly character, according to his family, who said he touched many people through his sense of humor and talent to entertain.

He graduated from Georgia Southern University in 1966. After two years as a school teacher, he worked for a government program under the auspices of the Medical Association of Georgia in Savannah and Atlanta. He began a retail career as the buyer/ manager of a small chain of clothing and linen shops in Georgia and Florida. In July 1969 he married the love of his life, Janet Sallette Murray.

In 1974 they moved to Hilton Head, and Rick opened a men’s clothing store with a partner, Bill Wilkins (deceased). He subsequently sold his interest in the men’s store and opened two children’s clothing and gift stores on the island with his wife.

In 1981 he began his real estate career, and in 1986 he was a founding partner of Charter One Realty. He served as president of the Hilton Head Association of Realtors and on the Association’s Board. He also served on the Board of the Hilton Head Multiple Listing Service. Until his death, he remained a partner and on the Board of Charter One Realty. He also served as a Trustee of the Georgia Southern University Foundation.

He was a founding member and served as an elder of Providence Presbyterian Church. At his death, he was an active member of Hilton Head Presbyterian Church. He was a long-time member of Community Bible Study. After partial retirement late in life, he served as a volunteer chaplain at the Hilton Head Hospital.

He was a firm believer in Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and died quite confident of his home in heaven. He prayed constantly that family and friends would also trust in Jesus and be assured of eternal life. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hilton Head Presbyterian Church/Missions.

He is survived by his college sweetheart and wife of 52 years, Janet; a daughter, April Murray (Billy) Gray; a son, Richard Murray Jr.; a sister, Althea Murray Yates; two grandsons, Bodie Alan Fisher and Jesse Arden Gray; step-grandchildren, Dylan Yarborough, Gabby Gray and Will Gray; and many nieces and nephews.

A celebration-of-life service was held Jan. 8 at Hilton Head Presbyterian Church.

The Island Funeral Home and Crematory was in charge of arrangements.

 

Kenneth Sweat

Jesup—Kenneth Sweat, 35, of Jesup died Jan. 6, 2022 after an extended illness.

The Wayne County native was a loving father who enjoyed spending time with his family. He was a fun-loving prankster who loved video games and superhero films.

He was preceded by his father, Allen Sweat; nephew, Jason Hart; and grandmother, Anita Martin (Granny Neet).

Survivors include his daughters, Emily Nicole Sweat of Jesup, Trinity Grace Sweat of Jesup, Carolyn Olivia Sweat of Jesup; mother, Mavis Cox of Jesup; stepmother, Kim (Herman) Manning of Jesup; sisters, Kimberly (Jacob) Hemphill, Megan (Brian) Williamson and Catherine (Calvin) Watson, all of Jesup; six nieces; and four nephews.

Memorial services were held on Jan. 7.

Virginia Anita Anderson Johns

Hortense—Virginia “Ginger” Anita Anderson Johns, 56, of Hortense died Jan. 9, 2022, at her residence following an extended illness.

She was born in Jesup, to the late Charles Estues Anderson and Betty Morgan Anderson of Hortense.

Along with her father, she was preceded in death by her son, Eric Johns.

She was a member of Hortense Holiness Church and enjoyed crocheting, reading, shopping and spending time with her family. She worked as pastor’s secretary for more than 25 years at First Baptist Church in Jesup.

Survivors include her husband, John Willie Johns; two grandchildren, Jayden Johns and Jaycie Johns of North Carolina; her mother, Betty Morgan Anderson of Hortense; her sister and brother-in-law, Cindy Anderson (Robert) Ragsdale of Tallahassee, Florida; her nephew, Caden Ragsdale of Tallahassee; several aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives; and a host of friends.

Graveside services will be held today (Thursday) at 11 a.m. at Duck Pond Cemetery with the Rev. Ray McMillan and the Rev. Mike VonMoss officiating.

Pallbearers will be Justin Roberson, Roger Sloan, Spencer Martin, Slade McCauley, A.J. Hendrix and Cameron Martin.

Charles Edward “Eddie” Whitted

Blackshear—Charles Edward “Eddie” Whitted, 75, of Blackshear died peacefully Jan. 8, 2022, at the Hospice Satilla Hospice House with his wife by his side.

 After graduating from Paxon High School in Jacksonville, Florida, Class of 1965, he received a baseball scholarship to St. John’s Junior College. However, he was drafted to serve in Vietnam. When he returned from service in southeast Asia, he attended the University of Florida. He had owned and operated B & W Door Company for several years.

He was a member of First Baptist Church of Blackshear, Lakeview Golf Club, the Screven Masonic Lodge No. 368 and the Veterans Service Board in Atlanta. He was appointed and sworn in by Gov. Nathan Deal and was reappointed by Gov. Brian Kemp. He worked closely with commissioners Pete Wheeler, Mike Roby and the newly elected commissioner, Col. (USAF, Ret.) Patricia Ross. He assisted countless veterans with their claims as well as their widows who were left behind, not knowing what to do. He will be missed by the veterans of Southeast Georgia, for he was one of their strongest advocates.

He was a son of the late William “Bill” and Lucille Thornton Whitted. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Jimmy Whitted, and by a nephew, James Gregory Boyette.

Survivors include his wife, Brenda Chancey Whitted, of Blackshear; his sister, Joan Boyette of Jesup; a first cousin who was more like a brother to him, Ron Reddish of Ocala, Florida; nieces and nephews, Sandra B. Strickland of Jesup and Michael Whitted of Screven, William R. (Susan) Riddle Jr. of Woodlands, Texas, Barry (Jamie) Riddle of Screven and Jade L. Chancey of Oakland, California; numerous great- and great-great-nieces and nephews; and several other relatives.

Funeral services will be held today (Thursday) at noon from the First Baptist Church in Blackshear.

The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.

He will be laid to rest at the Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Glennville.

Active pallbearers will be Billy Walker, Shelby Sweat, Frank Sweat and Marion Gray, who were his golfing buddies; James Starling, his childhood friend; and a cousin, Ron Reddish.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Screven Masonic Lodge No. 368 and the Vietnam Veterans Lodge No. 1070. All Vietnam veterans are also invited to serve as honorary pallbearers. All pallbearers are requested to meet at the church by 11:30 a.m. Thursday.

James Robinson

Jesup—James “Junebug” Robinson died on Nov. 14, 2021.

He was a 1980 graduate of Wayne County High School. He was a friend to many. In his honor, friends, family and classmates are being asked to come together to commemorate his life. The celebration-of-life services will be held at Bennett Union Educational Building on Jan. 15 at 1 p.m.

Those attending are asked to come prepared to share their fondest memories of him.
