Lillian “Lill” Carter Crews

Jesup—Lillian “Lill” Carter Crews, 91, of Jesup died Dec. 14, 2021, at Cotton Grove Estates and under the care of Hospice of South Georgia.

The Folkston native had lived in Wayne County most of her life and attended Jesup First a Baptist Church. She was a retired SunTrust Bank teller and former Wayne Drug Company employee and Bon Air and The Pig waitress.

She enjoyed pouring herself into the lives of others by her selfless and gracious actions, her family said. Her “servant’s heart” loved cooking, baking and attending to her grandchildren and the apples of her eye, her great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her two sons, Dennis (Faren) Crews of Shellman Bluff and Danny (Michelle) Crews of Jesup; two grandsons, Tyler (Leah) Crews of Guyton and Stuart Crews of Jesup; two great-grandchildren, Braylee and Asher Crews; a brother, Harvin (Kaye) Carter of Folkston; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Dec. 16 at Rinehart and Sons Chapel with Dr. Mike VonMoss officiating. Interment was in Pinecrest Memorial Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Tyler and Stuart Crews, Dagan Martin and Carson Anderson, Ricky Carter and Allen Nelson. Honorary pallbearers were the staffs of Cotton Grove Estates and Hospice of South Georgia and Dean and Kay Wohglemuth.

Charles W. Hubbard Sr.

Jesup—Charles W. Hubbard Sr., 90, of Jesup died Dec. 20, 2021.

The Colquitt County native had lived in Jesup since 1968 and had resided in Aiken, South Carolina, for eight years. He was a prior owner and operator of WAKN-AM and WNEZ-FM radio stations and Jesup Broadcasting.

He was a Rotarian, Jesup Elk Lodge member, former president of the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce, and member of the VFW was very active in community affairs.

He had been a staff sergeant in the U.S. Air Force, having served in the Korean Conflict. He attended Trinity Baptist Church, and he enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Morris Hubbard of Jesup; a son, Charles “Butch” Hubbard Jr. of Jesup; a daughter, Jean Anne H. Lewis of Aiken, South Carolina; a stepsister, Wondle (G.W.) Batten of Jacksonville, Florida; six grandchildren, Matt Hubbard, Chad Hubbard, Justin and Derek Lewis, Michelle Leach and Brooke Lewis; and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Dec. 22 from Rinehart and Sons Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Vann Dempsey officiating. Active pallbearers were family. Honorary pallbearers were friends and the Liars Club members. Private family interment will be held at Sunset Oaks Memorial Cemetery with presentation of the U.S. flag.

In lieu of flowers, memorial are requested to Hospice of South Georgia Building Fund, 1625 Sunset Blvd, Jesup, GA. 31545.

Darwin Mixon

Jesup—Darwin Mixon, 68, of Jesup died Dec. 18, 2021, and was under the care of Hospice of South Georgia.

The Wayne County native was a member of Old Bethel Baptist Church and a farmer who could make anything grow. He was a loving, caring and selfless father and grandfather, and he had a great sense of humor, his family said.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Gene and Mildred Mixon; two sisters, Bobbie Laney and Glenda Cameron; and the mother of his daughter, Juanita Mansfield.

Survivors include a daughter, Mindy Melissa Mixon of Jesup; two grandsons, Triston and Dillon Anderson; a brother, Carson (Jessa) Mixon of Hortense; several nieces and nephews, including Melony Osterhoudt, Michael (Amy) Bobo, Deven (Candace) Mixon and Ginger (Mike) Perkins; several great-nieces and great-nephews; and five special friends, Warren Whidden, Wayne Scott, Wendell Williamson, Dean Thompson and Joel Greene.

Graveside funeral services were held Dec. 20 in Old Bethel Cemetery with the Rev. Deven Mixon officiating.

Charlotte Vernett Goolsby

Jesup—Charlotte Vernett Goolsby died peacefully Dec. 12, 2020, near Detroit, Michigan.

She was born in Jesup on March 5, 1945 to Frances Matella Pye and William Mabry Goolsby. In her youth, she and her family moved to Lakeland, Florida, and she graduated from LakeEland Senior High School in 1963.

Throughout her entire life, she loved reading and quilting, and was always open to trying new things—be it traveling, ballroom dancing or parasailing. She was a dear friend to many, offering kindness and joy to everyone she met, according to her family.

An avid entrepreneur and crafter, she co-owned a bookstore in Lakeland and other small businesses with her dearest friend, Patsy Ruth Weston.

She served the country as a wife to a Marine Corps officer and kept the home fires burning during multiple tours of duty. She experienced life throughout the United States, including North Carolina; Seattle; Florida; Orange County California; and Texas.  Always a free spirit, she traveled extensively and found people and things to delight her everywhere she went, her family said.

She served her community her entire life—caring for neighbors, volunteering extensively, and serving as a board member of the Kyle Public Library in Texas.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Mabry Lavone Goolsby.

Survivors include her three children, Christina, Virginia and Jonathan; and many grandchildren, nieces and nephews

She will be laid to rest with her family during a celebration-of-life service on Dec. 30 at 11 a.m. at New Hope Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery in Madray Springs. In the case of inclement weather, services will be held inside the church. The family requests donations to the Alzheimer’s Association in lieu of flowers or gifts (https://www.alz.org/).

Lola Mae Ryals Powell Dennis

Jesup—Lola Mae Ryals Powell Dennis, 80, of Jesup died Dec. 20, 2021.

The former Long County resident had lived in Wayne County the past 30 years and was a 1959 graduate of Jesup High School.

She was a former employee with Winn Dixie of Jesup, a homemaker and a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Phillip and Opal Ryals; her daughter, Zeze Powell; and her former husband, Johnny Powell.

Survivors include her husband, Robert Lee Dennis of Jesup; a daughter, Shannee Strickland of Jesup; a son, Derk Powell of Fort Gaines, Alabama; a granddaughter, Amber Powell; and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held by the family.

Walter William Bunch Jr.

Jesup—Walter William Bunch Jr., 64, died Dec. 18, 2021, at home surrounded by his loving family under the care of Hospice of South Georgia.

A resident of Jesup for nearly 50 years, he was born on Jan. 22, 1957, in Screven County to the late William Walter and Elma White Bunch.

He worked as a truck driver for Mobile Concrete for more than 30 years and was a longtime member of the Blanton Grove Church of God, where he was a faithful worker in the food bank. He loved the Lord, and he also loved his church. Christmas was his favorite time of the year, and he would often dress up as Santa Claus to help do his part in spreading Christmas cheer. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing.

Survivors include his wife of 26 years, Sheila Hannah Bunch of Jesup; five children, Melissa (Jimmy) Hooper, the Rev. Josh (Kristyn) May, Patrick Bunch, Jodie May and companion John Lewis, and Justin May and Jessie Manning, all of Jesup; grandchildren, Matthew Bunch, Kevin Rodriguez, Amelia Hooper, Brooke Jones, Lance Jones, Ansley Jones, Carrson May, Aniston May, Moriah May and Ella May; a great-grandson, Isaiah Lewis; siblings, Rufus (Michelle) Bunch of Jesup, Mae (Jeff) Baumgardt of Surrency, Joe (Diane) Bunch, John Bunch of Surrency and Andy (Melanie) Bunch of Jesup; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended-family members.

Memorial services were held Dec. 22 at Blanton Grove Church of God with the Rev. Josh May officiating.

Rebecca “Becky”  Tapley Stewart

West Columbia, South Carolina—Rebecca “Becky” Tapley Stewart, died suddenly on Dec. 5, 2021, at Lexington Hospital in West Columbia, South Carolina.

She was born Aug. 2, 1953, in Hazlehurst to John and Juanita Riner Tapley. She was known for how much she loved all of her family, her family said. She would always give anything she had to those she loved. There were many things that kept her busy, especially making quilts for her family. Her favorite times were spent with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her loving husband Edward James Stewart, and four siblings, Sammy Tapley, Johnnie Findley, Georgie Nelle (Genelle) Ray and Troy Tapley.

Survivors include her siblings, Frances Floyd (Robert), Atha Richert, Kenneth Tapley (Maurene), Tony Tapley (Karen) and Aubrey Tapley; her five children, Diane Stewart, Lucretia McLendon, Gary Stewart, Charles Stewart and Jeffrey Stewart; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held Jan. 22, 2022, at Little Flock Church Cemetery in Collins. Time to be later determined.

Visitation will follow at her family’s farm.
