Harold L. Hanson

Jesup—Harold L. Hanson, 85, died peacefully in his sleep on May 17, 2021.

He was born near Ruthven, Iowa, on June 29, 1935. He was the son of Harry and Joan Hanson. He graduated from Ruthven Consolidated School.

In 1954 he married Norma Ann Lewis. He worked a few years on a turkey farm near his hometown before enlisting in the U.S. Army. He served stateside in Connecticut, Colorado, Georgia, North Carolina and Texas and overseas in Turkey, Korea, Vietnam, Okinawa and Panama. After 25-plus years of service, he retired as a sergeant major and then worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 20-plus years in Jonesboro.

He always seemed to be in a good mood. His love, humor and camaraderie will be missed by all who knew him, his family says.

After Norma passed away in 2007, he married Lucille Ward Hires, a Jesup native, in 2008.  He was preceded in death by his wives, Norma in 2007 and Lucille last December, both of whom he loved dearly.

Survivors include his two children, Rachel (Raymond) Stein and Steve Hanson, both of the Phoenix, Arizona, area; two grandchildren, Tarryn (Ryan) Quinlan of Virginia and Trevor (Amanda) Stein of Arizona; five great-grandchildren; three sisters, Nancy (James) Crumpler of North Carolina, Phyllis Erickson of Minnesota and Linda (Ken) Hutchins of Minnesota; his stepchildren, Bernice Varnedore of Richmond Hill, Clifton (Susan) Hires of Jesup and Herschell (Lee Ann) Hires Jr. of Florida; and many other relatives and friends.

Private interment services will be held in the Jesup City Cemetery.

Vernon Ellis Drury

Jesup—Vernon Ellis Drury, 88, of Jesup died May 26, 2021. 

The White Oak, Florida, native had lived most of his adult life in Wayne County and was a Baptist. The U.S. Army and Air Force veteran, having served in Korea, was a longtime employee with Brunswick Pulp and Paper and Grant Lewis Logging Company. He loved to spend time with his wife and ride Harley-Davidson motorcycles.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ouida Green Drury, and his son, Doyle Carson Drury.

Survivors include a son, Dwight (Ty) Drury of Jesup; a daughter-in-love, April Drury of Jesup; two granddaughters, Holly Drury Humphrey of Jesup and Lauren (Pete) Amis of Winder; four great-grandchildren, Morgan Humphrey and Riley, Walker and Wyatt Amis; and a sister, Jeanette (Roland) Carter Dodd, and brother, Donald (Ann) Carter, both of Brunswick.

Graveside funeral services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. in Pinecrest Memorial Cemetery with the Rev. Revis Wasdin officiating.

The family will receive friends at the cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Hospice of South Georgia, 1625 Sunset Blvd., Jesup, GA 31545.

Faith Brown Joyce

Jesup—Faith Brown Joyce, 81, of Jesup, died May 21, 2021, at SGHS in Bruns-wick, surrounded by her family, sharing love, storytelling, music and prayer.

A private family memorial service will be held at a later date.

Born Nov. 15, 1939, in Bridgeport, Connecticut, to the late Louis Arthur and Helen Julia L. Brown, she was retired from the administration department of the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Before her work at UNCW, she was employed at Porter-Gaud School in Charleston, South Carolina.

She was a former resident of Lakewood, Ohio, before moving to Jesup in 2009. She was a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Brunswick. She was a voracious reader and enjoyed crochet and knitting, gardening, Red Hat Ladies, tea parties, participating in book clubs and Bible study groups, and tending to her feline companions, Brian and Shadow.

She was preceded in death by her daughter Ayn-Martha Joyce.

Survivors include two children, Julia Joyce Domenick of Alexandria, Virginia, and Mark Stephen (Sharon) Joyce of North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; three grandchildren, Taylor Domenick, Collin Joyce and Hannah Joyce; three sisters, Virginia McGlaughlin of Gainesville, Florida, June Baldyga of Danbury, Connecticut, and Margaret Patrum of Charleston, South Carolina; and one nephew.

Those desiring may make memorial contributions to the Virginia Theological Seminary Chapel music program.

Clara Mae Dixon Chancey

Blackshear—Clara Mae Dixon Chancey, 94, of Blackshear died May 24, 2021, at her residence surrounded by her family.

Born in Offerman on March 27, 1927, she had lived in Pierce County all her life.  She was a homemaker and at the time of her passing was the oldest member of Offerman Baptist Church, for which she had served in various capacities until her health declined. She deeply loved her Lord, her church family, and especially her pastor, Brother James Lightsey.

In addition to being a member of Offerman Baptist, she had served as Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star at the Screven Lodge and was a member at the Ben Gibbs Chapter in Jesup. She will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother and aunt. She will also be remembered for her beautiful yards.

She was a daughter of the late Rev. Elmer Eugene and Ivy Lee Ratliff Dixon.  She was also preceded in death by her husband, Oscar Riley Chancey; her son, Terry Chancey; her son-in-law, Billy Riddle; and several brothers and sisters.

Survivors include two daughters, Glenda Riddle of K’ville and Brenda (Eddie) Whitted of Blackshear; a brother, Larry Dixon of Maccleny, Florida; three grandchildren, Ret. Lt. Col. Bill (Suzan) Riddle of Woodlands, Texas, Barry (Jamie) Riddle of K’ville, and Jade (Jennifer) Chancey of Oakland, California; eight great-grandchildren, Christopher Riddle, Kimberly Riddle, Destiny Chancey, Michael (Sarah) Chancey, Dusty Riddle, Clara Chancey, Adaline Chancey and Garrett Chancey; one great-great-grandchild, Mattelyn Alyssa, due to make her arrival in August; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Funeral services will be held Friday, May 28, at noon from Offerman Baptist Church. Interment will be in the Offerman Cemetery.

Visitation will be held at the church one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Offerman Baptist Church, 7225 U.S. Highway 84, Offerman, GA  31557; Hospice Satilla, 808 Evergreen Way, Waycross, GA  31501; or a charity of one’s choosing.
